Fight against RTI Fee hike continues: HC issues notice PDF Print E-mail

Unlocking informationChandigarh: March 23, 2009:- On a Civil Writ Petition by social activist Hemant Goswami, the Punjab and Haryana High Court today issued notice of motion to the Ministry of Home, Ministry of Personnel and the Chandigarh Administration. Writ has been filed on the issue of promulgation of separate rules under the Right to Information Act by which the UT of Chandigarh increased the RTI application fee and the cost of documents to be obtained under RTI by 500 percent.

The petitioner in his writ has mentioned that the action of promulgation new RTI rules under Section 28 of the RTI Act by the Administrator of Chandigarh and the aiding public servants has been done without any authority, was illegal and created a parallel governance system, outside the purview of the law established by the Constitution and the Parliament.

Salman and Ajay fined for smokingChandigarh: January 8, 2009:- Acting on the complaint of Burning Brain chairperson and social activist Hemant Goswami against film star Ajay Devgan, a police inspector of Chandigarh Police went to hotel Taj, Chandigarh to issue prosecution slip (Challan) to Devgan yesterday evening.

The film crew and the actor made the police officer wait for a couple of hours and then asked him to come over the next morning at 10 am. Not only this Ajay’s manager also made the police officer talk to certain senior officers on the phone and this was reported by a section of press too. Again when the police officer went to serve the prosecution slip the next morning at 10 am, he was again made to wait for half an hour and then told that the actor has left for the shoot.

Why is the justice system failingChandigarh: March 21, 2009 :- A symposium on “Why is the justice system failing” was held by a group of civil society organisations at Commonwealth Youth Centre today. A group of civil society organisations including Burning Brain Society, Resurgence India, People for Transparency, etc; from the region got together under the banner of “Coalition for Social Engineering” and deliberated about the ills suffered in the administration of Justice.

Hitender Jain of Resurgence mentioned that the onus to uphold the Constitution, the laws and the regulation lies with the Judiciary but however over the years, the situation has gone from bad to worse. “The judicial system appears to have totally failed. The condition of the quasi-judicial system is even worst. Most quasi-judicial systems have become a farce, and a place to accommodate and resettle the retired sycophants. The appointment in most of the commissions and forums is done in a hush-hush manner and without any transparency.” Jain added.
